Highlights & Lowlights Specialists
Highlights have been one of the most popular colour choices at our Addlestone Salon for years – and they never really go out of fashion.
Highlights ideal if you want to go lighter, break up a block colour or add depth back into your hair. Whether you want to blend away grey hairs or be a natural-looking blonde highlights are you best friend.
Looking to add chocolates, caramels or reds to your hair for extra dimension and a stunning contrast? That’s where lowlights work their magic.
We're A Stripe-Free Zone!
Highlighting has come a long way from the chunky, stripey highlights of the 90s. Today’s techniques focus on softness, blend and placement.
Using foils, we carefully place lighter and darker sections through the hair to create movement, contrast and shape — enhancing your cut and bringing your colour to life. You might suit:
A full head of highlights for all-over brightness
A half head or T-section to maintain your colour
Soft, face-framing pieces to lift your complexion
Lowlights to add depth, richness and dimension
It’s all about getting the balance right so your colour feels natural, modern and easy to wear.

Everything You Need To Know About Highlights
What’s the difference between highlights and lowlights?
Highlights lighten sections of the hair, while lowlights add darker tones. Together, they create depth, contrast and a more natural-looking finish.
Will highlights suit me?
If we don’t think the look you’re going for would suit you, we’ll let you know at your consultation. We’ll always tailor the placement, tone and brightness of your highlights to suit your skin tone, haircut and personal style.
Are highlights high maintenance?
It depends on how close to your natural hair shade you go, how close to the root the colour is placed and how quickly your hair grows. Softer, more blended techniques can help your colour grow out more naturally. Most clients only need a full head of highlights every two to three appointments.
Can highlights look natural?
Absolutely. Modern highlighting focuses on fine sections and soft blending, so the result looks natural rather than stripy.
What’s the difference between highlights and balayage?
Highlights use foils for a more structured lift, while balayage is hand-painted for a softer, more lived-in finish.
Do I need a toner?
You’ll almost certainly need a toner. They are used after lightening to refine the shade, whether you prefer cool, creamy, warm or neutral tones.
Do I need a patch test?
Yes — if you’re new to colour or haven’t had one recently, we’ll need to carry out a patch test at least 48
hours before your appointment.
